Bhavana Somayaji is a passionate Latin dance instructor and performer based in Phoenix, AZ. With over eight years of experience in Salsa and Bachata, she has taught, performed, and social danced extensively, sharing her love for these dynamic styles across various cities.

In addition to Latin dance, Bhavana has trained in several other forms, including Bharatanatyam, Jazz, Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, and Tap. Her passion for dance grew when she discovered Salsa through the ASU Salsa Club, where she served as one of the officers. She later became a core dancer with Mambo Exquisite (Salsa, Mambo, Afro-Cuban, Cuban Contemporary, Boogaloo, Pachanga) and served as a project team dancer and director for Que Candela Dance Company (Dominican Bachata, Mambo, Salsa).

Currently, she teaches Salsa and Bachata classes as a self-employed instructor with an emphasis on creative expression and fusion. Bhavana is also training in the classical Indian dance form of Odissi while exploring other styles such as Zouk, Kizomba, Belly Dancing, Dancehall, and House to further expand her versatility.

Currently pursuing a Doctorate in Physical Therapy, she blends the art of movement with a scientific understanding of physical health and rehabilitation. One of her missions is to integrate Physical Therapy into dance, promoting creative expression, wellness, and movement for all.

Bhavana’s name, rooted in Sanskrit, means ‘expression’ and ‘development’—values she embodies in both her life and work. She is committed to giving back to the community by sharing her love for life, movement, and creativity.

About Bhavana’s Classes at TUMBAO | Latin Fridays:
In Bhavana’s classes, creating a welcoming and safe space for all levels and genders is the top priority. Whether you’re an experienced dancer or stepping onto the floor for the first time, Bhavana focuses on movement concepts while teaching patterns, ensuring that students can apply their knowledge to social dancing beyond just memorizing steps. No partner is required, as she encourages partner rotation in class. If you prefer to dance with your own partner, that’s absolutely fine too!
